"E" as in EXTREME hate...
I had no idea what I'd write about this week for Alphabe-Thursday and then the news about the Charleston, South Carolina church killings broke. Nine people murdered because of a person's extreme hate.
I've never understood the ability to hate that deeply. What motivates someone to be consumed by hate?
My son had a doctor's appointment a couple of weeks ago. While waiting he sent me a text about a man in the waiting room. "Wait until I get home and tell you about what this guy is saying." What he was saying was bizarre and hate filled, but I told my son he had to be getting his rant from somewhere. Sure enough, I did a quick google search and pulled up the same hate filled statements.
I have a love hate relationship with the Internet. There are many things I enjoy online, but its presence has also opened up a whole can of worms. People can now easily spread misinformation and hate. A hate filled person can find others to validate and fuel his hatred in the anonymous Internet world.
I don't know if that's what actually happened in the South Carolina tragedy, but I wouldn't be surprised to learn that this murderer/terrorist spent a considerable amount of time online with like minded people.
Hate has always been around and I'm afraid always will be, but I think the Internet is just one of the contributing factors that has made hatred worse in recent times.
Today my prayers are with everyone affected by hate.

My heart also aches for the families and town. I hope that they are a little closer to getting some closure with this event. Thank you for your eloquence in describing something that has so much power over us.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Betty that was a sad sad story of hate. I really do not understand how that can happen.
ReplyDeleteI think you are right. This senseless killing is beyond my comprehension. So sad.
ReplyDeleteThis act was so shocking, especially since he had spent considerable time with the Bible study group. It's hard to wrap your mind around such a thing, even though there have been similar instances for years. I think you have hit the nail on the head concerning the internet.
ReplyDeletePowerful post and I believe that those that 'hate' hurt themselves more than they hurt others ~ We need more love and realization that we are all connected in this world ~ Internet has taken away some of that 'human connection' that we all need ~ xx
ReplyDeleteHappy Weekend to you,
artmusedog and carol
Beautifully written Betty. I think too much mainstream media giving these violent people the center stage is a huge part of the problem. I do not wish to see their faces. They are faces of evil and media stream media shoves it down our throats. Racism will always exists. I am stunned by it. We have many friends of other races and I will never understand it. We don't have to get along with every single person in the world but my goodness, do not hate!
ReplyDeleteThe world is increasingly becoming intolerant of everything and anything. Wonder where all the patience went.
ReplyDeleteIt is such a sad thing to have happened.
Well said...tragic and sad.
ReplyDeleteGood for you, Betty, for bringing up this subject.
ReplyDeleteI think that people who hate are insecure individuals. So, if they get under the spell of someone who makes them feel good, they will believe whatever that person says. It's unfortunate if that person is hateful. It doesn't help when there are highly opinionated TV stations that fuel hateful people such a this kid. I hope justice is served and this kid is tried for being a terrorist. Maybe then, some people who are on the road to being hateful will stop and think.
Best wishes to you.
The View from the Top of the Ladder
Often hate is based on ignorance. It's terrible, but what to do against it ?
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more. It's just beyond anything most of us can even imagine.
ReplyDeleteOh sweet friend.
ReplyDeleteI share your views. How can anyone create such devastation on purpose. I look around at my very small, chronic pain filled world of the moment and try to imagine anyone creating misery on purpose.
Such ugly actions.
Thanks for linking. I share your thoughts and send you a great big hug.
